Wrestling had been contested at the Tokyo Olympics Game 2021 since the sport was introduced in the ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC. When the modern Olympic Games resumed in Athens in 1896, wrestling (in the form of Greco-Roman wrestling) became a focus of the Games, with the exception of the 1900 Olympics Game when wrestling did not appear on the program. Freestyle wrestling and weight classes both made their first appearance in 1904. The women’s competition was introduced in 2004.
In February 2013, the IOC voted to drop wrestling from the Summer Olympic programme, effective 2020. The president of the sport’s governing body, FILA (now United World Wrestling), resigned after a subsequent motion of no confidence. Following changes in leadership, and revisions to the programme for 2016 (including rule changes and additional women’s competitions), wrestling successfully campaigned to be readmitted to the Summer Olympic program.

Five countries have been represented at all Olympics Game 2021 – Greece, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, and Australia, though not always as part of official teams. Even though they boycotted the 1956 Olympics, Switzerland is on this list – they had competed in the equestrian events several months earlier in Stockholm. France did not send a team to the 1904 Games, but alone, Frenchman did compete for the USA and a mixed team. Also, in 1896 Great Britain competed as part of the ‘United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland,’ while Australia participated in 1908 and 1912 as part of a combined Australasia team with New Zealand. Therefore, only Greece has participated under its own flag in all modern summer Olympic Games out of these five nations.
